This hand made box is made from an oak tree that I harvested in the Santa Cruz mountains. The tree fell down in a storm a few years ago, and I milled it up with a chainsaw. The wood had to dry for over a year before it could be processed. I wanted to create a unique design that highlighted the rough bark edge, but was still functional. It is sturdy, made from a California black oak, and finished with clear oil (Rubio Monocoat) to give it a matte look. The hinges are solid brass. The inside of the top is filled with some epoxy in areas that had some spalting; this gives it a really unique look. The corners are keyed for strength.
The top of the box is about 13″x7.5″, and the height is about 4.5″
